Sentiment reversed yet again, with fixed income ETFs attracting most of the inflows (€1.1bn) and equity ETFs suffering significant outflows (-€739m) as trade wars, China and European issues dominated the agenda. Year-to-date, flows remain strong but behind last year’s record levels.

Among equities, interest in US markets rebounded sharply (€717m) as investors looked for economic growth. In contrast, Japanese and emerging market equities endured their worst month ever.

Outflows from European equities did slow somewhat but were still significant. A strong run for global equities came to a sudden end.

Fixed income ETFs returned to favour amid the uncertainty. Developed market government bond flows turned positive overall, although European government bonds suffered another negative month.

Emerging market government bonds rebounded slightly, but interest in inflation-linked bonds waned.
